Sunny Saturday Thoughts on Creativity

"The artist brings something into the world that didn't exist before, and he does it without destroying something else. A kind of refutation of the conservation of matter."
John Updike

Just a thought today about how artists often feel about their work. Sometimes, there is a little bittersweet feeling when you sell a painting because one of your "creations" is going away. Your work is born in your head, grows and develops as you work it, then reaches maturity through revision and completion. Just like the miracle of birth, the miracle of creativity is a wonderful thing. But there comes a time when you have to let it go...to the gallery, to they buyer, to the editor. Letting go is also freeing. The next piece of work that has been brewing now has room to be expressed and find its place in the world. A never ending process.
