Art Scholarship Student at Olde Towne Art

For a few weeks now, I have been teaching a drawing class to some very talented, and willing students. Kenny, one of my students, has never had formal art classes of any kind and is strictly self taught. He is quiet and bright and has done very well. We have gone through some basics on perspective, shadow and light, and some basic principles of good composition. Soon, we will be talking about color, which is very exciting.
I learn as much as the students in trying to verbalize so many of the things that I know about creating artwork. I have been doing it for so long that I realize that there is much that I do out of habit and seldom think about reasons why. This is good for me; trying to rethink why I make certain decisions. Michelle and Sheila are also in the class and doing beautifully as well. Of course, I'm very biased as I think all my students are great.
I also am teaching so many of the things that I wish I had been told in college art classes. In the mid seventies, the whole art thing was very different from so much of where I feel it is now. We were still rebounding from the 60's and many of the other art students were more interested in portraying the brooding artist rather than actually creating something of beauty or meaning. I have much to say in this class and have to periodically put some music on, leave the room and let my students have some peace in which to work. I hope that it is as good for them as it is for me.
