When to leave well enough alone.

A couple of artists friends and I were tossing emails back and forth the other day and discussing how we know when a painting is finished.
I find almost always that when I finish a painting, sign it and walk away for a few days, when I return there is always something that I want to change.
Sometimes I can change it, sometimes I can't.
When a pastel is finished and I've found the time to frame it and it's under glass, it remains as it was. But with my oils, I often feel that "just a little stroke here," or a slight change will improve things.
I have a current painting that I thought was finished. I let it sit for over a week and then when I looked again, I felt like I must have lost my mind to have created such a dumb thing. I got my brush out and went crazy for an hour or so and changed it dramatically.
Now, I'm not finished with the "after" picture yet, but it's getting there.
It's all a process.
